How cover balls prevent algae growth

Algae growth in stagnant water is a common issue, affecting everything from reservoirs and ponds to industrial water tanks. When organic nutrients mix with sunlight, algae can multiply rapidly, leading to reduced water quality, higher maintenance costs, and potential health hazards. One of the most effective solutions is using floating cover balls, also known as Bird Balls™, which provide extensive coverage to prevent algae growth.

Why preventing algae growth is crucial

Algae overgrowth isn’t just an aesthetic issue – it can lead to serious consequences across various environments. In water storage tanks and drinking reservoirs, algae can release harmful toxins that compromise water quality. In lakes and ponds, excessive blooms strip oxygen from the water, disrupting aquatic ecosystems. Industrial facilities and wastewater plants also face challenges, as unchecked algae growth can clog filtration systems, increase maintenance demands, and cause costly operational delays. Even airports are affected, as open water sources attract birds, posing a significant safety risk to aircraft.

How floating cover balls work

Our cover balls provide a low-maintenance and long-term solution to these challenges. Made from UV-stabilised high-density polyethylene (HDPE), these durable balls cover the water surface to effectively block sunlight, which is essential for algae to grow.

The key benefits are:

  • Floating cover balls block up to 91% of sunlight, preventing algae from photosynthesising and spreading across the water surface.
  • By limiting algae growth, they reduce the decomposition of organic material, maintaining stable water quality.
  • They help minimise water evaporation, keeping water cooler and further discouraging algae proliferation.
  • Designed to stay in place even in strong winds, they ensure effective coverage at all times.
  • Environmentally safe as the plastic will not leach, and any natural wildlife such as fish or newts can continue to live safely.

Why cover balls are a cost-effective solution for algae control

Cover balls provide a long-lasting, low-maintenance solution to algae control. Made from UV-resistant materials, they are designed to withstand the elements for up to 25–30 years without the need for upkeep. Their ability to reduce algae formation, evaporation, and maintenance costs makes them a cost-effective investment for businesses and public facilities.

Versatile in application, they are widely used in water tanks, lakes, sewage treatment plants, rainwater basins, mining sites, and airport reservoirs – offering a practical and sustainable way to protect water quality and reduce operational challenges.

Technical specifications:

  • Material: UV-stabilised HDPE
  • Diameter: 100 mm
  • Weight: 40g (air-filled), 240g (water-filled)
  • Coverage: 116 balls per square meter
  • Lifespan: 10+ years
  • Wind Resistance: Up to 80 km/h (air-filled), up to 150 km/h (water-filled)

Simple installation

Installing Bird Balls™ is quick and straightforward, requiring no specialist equipment. They naturally spread across the water surface, forming a near-complete barrier. If the location allows, the balls can be tipped directly from a truck into the water. Alternatively, they can be emptied manually from the bags they are delivered in. Each bag contains 1,550 balls, and two bags fit on a single pallet (totalling 3,100 balls per pallet).

A sustainable approach to water conservation

Unlike chemical treatments, Bird Balls™ offer a natural and long-lasting way to control algae growth. By forming a protective barrier, they not only reduce sunlight penetration but also help prevent water evaporation, ensuring better water conservation over time. Whether for industrial use, public reservoirs, or private water storage, these cover balls provide a simple yet highly effective solution for managing water resources efficiently.
